What makes a great athlete an Olympic hero?
优秀运动员如何成为奥运英雄?

June 9, 2008

On August 8, the world's greatest athletes will enter Beijing's National Stadium to open the Olympics. The athletes will walk in as national teams, proudly waving their countries' flags. Sixteen days later, the athletes will enter the stadium again to end the games. But this time they will enter as a mixed group of athletes. This Olympic tradition has been practiced since 1956. It shows us that while people come to the Olympics divided, they leave united.

The Olympics have always tried to promote Olympic values like good sportsmanship and fair play. These values inspire us to be better people. They are also one of the reasons the Olympics are so popular.

The Olympic have also produced athletes that inspire us . Their actions remind us the Olympic creed :"The most important thing in the Olypic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph , but the struggle…"

Beating the odds
Wilma Rudolph was born into a poor family with 22 children. Life for the Rudolphs was not easy. As a black family, the Rudolphs faced discrimination in education and health care. Wilma was often sick, and when she was four years old, one leg stopped working.

Doctors said she had polio and would never walk again. But her family wouldn’t give up. They took care of her, and Wilma slowly got better. By age eight, she could walk with a leg brace. At 13, she was the star of her school basketball team.

Wilma won her first Olympic medal in 1956 when she was only 16 years old. Then, at the 1960 Rome Olympics, she won three gold medals.

Wilma overcame many challenges to become the fastest woman alive. But her victory was important for other reasons too. Wilma didn’t use her fame to become rich or powerful. She used it to help others, especially those who were poor and disadvantaged.

Winning isn’t everything
John Landy of Australia set a world record for the one-mile race in 1954. But he is best remembered for the 1956 Melbourne Games. There, during a race, some runners fell. John stopped running to see if anyone was injured. Although he was behind in the race, he started running again. He passed the other runners and went on to win the race!

Don’t give up
In the 1992 Barcelona Games, British runner Derek Redmond was set to win the men’s 400-meter race. Then tragedy struck. Derek tore a muscle in his leg and fell. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he got to his feet and began hobbling down the track. His father ran to help him. Despite his injury, Derek finished the race. By doing so, he became an Olympic hero.

To these athletes, winning was not what mattered the most. They showed the importance of participation and good sportsmanship. And that’s what makes great athletes Olympic heroes.
