Chinese torch bearer receives Sarkozy´s sympathy note

French Senate President Christian Poncelet made a special trip to meet Chinese torch bearer Jin Jing after arriving in Shanghai on Monday. Poncelet gave President Nicolas Sarkozy's sympathy note to Jin Jing, a wheelchair-bound fencer who was attacked during the Olympics torch relay in Paris.

In the letter Sarkozy says he would like to express deep regret towards the way Jin Jing was shoved in Paris when she held the Olympic torch two weeks ago. He says Jin Jing showed outstanding courage which honors herself and China.

Sarkozy says he understands the Chinese people's feelings were hurt with what went on that day especially the intolerable attack Jin Jing suffered which he strongly condemns.

The letter says the incidents that were brought about by a few people don't reflect the feelings of the French people towards the Chinese people. Sarkozy also invited Jin Jing to France in the near future as his guest.

After hearing what the letter had to say, Jin Jing stressed that protecting the torch is what every Chinese and every athlete is ready to do. She hopes the flame can also pass Chinese people's friendship to the people around the world.

Poncelet said the French people were also hurt by the attack Jin Jing suffered in Paris. He said France will make effort to strengthen friendship between the two sides and believes the Beijing Olympics will be very successful.

As an overseas come-back born and bred in the China, I felt compelled to write. It is a disgrace that pro-Tibet supporters have decided to utilize the Olympic stage to forward their agenda. However, it will backfire in their faces as the Chinese will not be bullied by anyone. I was slightly sympathetic towards the Tibetan plight prior to the Olympic protests. Tibet has and will always be part of historical Chinese territory.

However, the younger generation was more benevolent towards the idea of granting self-autonomy for Tibet in exchange for their promise to remain part of China. Not anymore. My entire family and many friends changed their minds and have taken a hard-line towards Tibet. We will go to any lengths necessary to retain Tibet. My best friend's family is Manchurian so my views and grounds are not entirely ethnic Han.

It is imperative in Chinese culture to retain "face" and we will never forgive anyone that gives none to us. The Dalai Lama and Tibetans should understand by now that more can be gained privately with the Chinese instead of publicly humiliating and causing loss of face to them. The protests have united the Chinese population across the world and the surge in nationalistic feeling is frightening. It reminds me of Nazi Germany out to hang the Jews. For now to say, China is on its own path, despite difficulties, to the superpower status and will hence restrain from the present abasement from the west. The hatred and  enmity is perhaps well planted into the consciousness of Chinese people.

It's hypocritical of the world community to condemn China over Tibet issue which is historical Chinese land dating back at least 500 years. The Chinese elevated the Dalai Lama to his position of authority, otherwise the king of Tibet would have kept him in jail. Yet this same world community remained strangely silent over the Russian overthrow of a democratically elected President and ethnic cleansing in Chechnya. Now who is the hypocrite?

The Dalai Lama is not an administrator and has no clear plans on how he would govern or feed his people if Tibet became an independent yet poor country. We all know that a society full of nuns and monks cannot sustain a country. The world community does not even think of the financial burden that a free Tibet will be upon them. All of this is based on emotion without any concrete plans.

An additional round of applause goes to our fearless warrior Jin Jing. She demonstrated the spirit and moral statue of a normal Chinese girl. I respect her deeply from the inner core of my heart.
