Intro
Shakira has been a huge star in South America for several years. However, her latest album, Laundry Service, is her first with songs in English. The native of Colombia is only 24 years old, but her music shows a lot of maturity. This is probably because she’s been writing songs since she was 8. Laundry Service is a diverse mix of different styles. From pop, to disco, to rock, to Latin, to world music, Shakira bravely blends a wide variety of sounds.
Dialogue
Although Shakira is not a native English speaker, her album shows that she has a good handle on the language. The first hit from the album, “Whenever, Wherever,” has several verses worth paying attention to. Here are two of them: “Thereover, hereunder You’ll never have to wonder We can always play by ear And that’s the deal my dear” “You’ve got me head over heels There’s nothing left to fear If you really feel the way I feel”
Discussion:
I’ve been a Shakira fan for several years. However, I have to admit that I like it better when she sings in Spanish. For some reason the songs are more interesting to me, even though I can’t understand them. Are you a Shakira fan? Have you heard her new album? Do you like it? Let us know!
